| Comprehensive Eye Exams |
A thorough “A to Z” exam entails a complete review of your ophthalmic and related medical symptoms. We will discuss your ocular complaints and medical history before checking your vision, with and without glasses. Then we test for pupil function, color vision, stereo vision and intraocular pressure.
|
|
| |
| We will check your eyes for glasses, if needed, and use a special instrument, a Slit Lamp, to study the front part of your eye (it won’t hurt at all!). The back of the eye’s optic nerve and retina will be checked with dilation drops or a “snapshot” by the OPTOMAP machine. Dilation will cause reading vision to blur for 4-6 hours along with light sensitivity so we recommend bringing sunglasses, and a driver if possible.

Optomap Panoramic 200 Retinal Imaging System is the latest technology to offer immediate and painless digital views of the retina (the interior back of the eye).
During a Comprehensive exam, eyes are routinely dilated to examine the back of the eye (retina). Without dilation, Optomap provides for a more complete view of the area than was previously possible. It also creates a digital record of the structures of the retina for your permanent medical record.
Prior to Optomap, the only way to examine the back of the eye was with dilation. For some people dilation is an inconvenience due to blurriness and light sensitivity after their exam has been completed. With Optomap, this discomfort can be avoided and the patient can return to school or work without experiencing blurred vision for the rest of the day.
Our Doctors at MEA Recommend Optomap Because:
- Early signs of eye disease are more easily detected.
- Vision loss is best avoided by detecting disease early.
- Doctors can better monitor your eye health annually.
- MEA is committed to offering the highest standard of care.
Who is a Candidate? Any patient can request the Optomap. It is an excellent method for examining the retina in kids of all ages. However, if you have a condition requiring a more thorough examination, dilation would be required.

| Cataract with Implant Surgery |
A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye behind the iris. Surgery is the only way to remove a cataract. There are no medications, dietary supplements, exercises, or optical devices to effectively treat cataracts.
In most instances, cataract surgery is an elective procedure. This means the time to remove the cataract is when it interferes with your visual needs. Based on your symptoms, our doctors at MEA will recommend when surgery is appropriate.
The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia on an out-patient basis using a microscope and delicate instruments to remove the cataract. In most cases, the focusing power of the eye is restored by placing a permanent lens implant inside the eye. The plastic lens implant is held in place by a natural membrane in the eye. In approximately 20% of people, this natural membrane will become cloudy, causing a decrease in vision. When this occurs, a laser can be used to open this cloudy membrane and restore vision. The laser is only used after the initial cataract surgery. Lasers are not used to remove the cataract itself. |

| Glaucoma, Medical & Surgical |
Glaucoma is a condition in which the pressure inside the eye is too high because the eye is filled with fluid, aqueous humor . In most patients this pressure increase is gradual, and will generally produce no early symptoms. But if the eye suddenly fills with the fluid, it can produce severe pain and quick changes in vision.
The pressure can damage the optic nerve. The first part of the optic nerve affected by glaucoma is our peripheral side vision, which is easy to detect. Left untreated, the optic nerve loss will increase until even the central vision is affected. Because damage to the optic nerve is irreversible, it is important to catch and begin glaucoma treatment immediately, before it causes any damage, or at least when the damage is minimal.
Treatment options vary depending on the severity and type of glaucoma detected. Our doctors at MEA will determine the most appropriate treatment based on the degree of glaucoma identified. Treatments may include eyedrops, pills, laser and surgery. Over the past 20 years, the treatments for glaucoma have increased greatly. In most patients, glaucoma is a treatable condition. The key to glaucoma treatment, as with most other diseases, is early detection and faithful adherence to the treatments prescribed by your doctor at MEA. .
Increased eye pressure is the greatest risk factor for the development of glaucoma. There are also other significant risk factors such as family history and race. If a family member has glaucoma, make certain your eyes are checked regularly. Also, African-Americans have a 4 times greater risk for glaucoma than are whites. In addition, age is a risk factor, especially over 40. |

| Eyelid Surgery |
Matossian Eye Associates (MEA) provides eyelid surgery for various eyelid disorders including droopy eyelids (blepharoptosis), suspicious or abnormal lesions of the eyelids, turning out of the eyelid (ectropion), turning in of the eyelid (entropion), and trichiasis (misdirected eye lashes).
Eyelid skin is very thin and can easily stretch with the effects of gravity and the natural aging process. Blepharoplasty, one of the surgical eyelid procedures offered at MEA, can help repair some of these effects. It involves removing excess skin, fat and muscle to improve the appearance of droopy eyelids.
We also offer cosmetic Botox® injections for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe wrinkles (rhytids) of the skin around the eye.
If you have any questions or would like additional information regarding these conditions and procedures, please contact us. There is also a link to an Educational Animation below to help demonstrate Blepharoplasty. To view in Spanish, select Spanish from the Languages drop down menu. |
